Tony worth Ten Bob in the City of York
THERE’s a star-studded line-up for this year’s Group One City of York Stakes (3.00pm), with a host of Group One winners lining up for what promises to be a fascinating renewal.
Notable Speech drops back to seven furlongs for this, having done most of his racing over a mile.
His latest run in the Group One Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot may have helped shape that decision.
He travelled well enough but appeared to weaken inside the final furlong, suggesting this drop in trip could suit.
The winner that day was Ed Walker’s TEN BOB TONY, who caused a major shock at a big price.
He then finished fourth in the Group One Sussex Stakes, running a big race and finishing ahead of several rivals he meets again here.
The recent rain is another positive, with his best form coming on easier ground.
Whether he really wants this drop back in trip is open to question, but there should be enough emphasis placed on stamina in this contest to bring him into the reckoning.
He appeals as a good Win and Place play with World Pool.
Another worth a go in the World Pool Win and Place markets is MARVELMAN.
With the Andrew Balding team in such strong form now is not the time to desert this four-year-old.
He was too keen at Goodwood last time, but this race should set up better for him. He won’t mind the ground and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see an improved performance.
Away from York, there’s some good action at Chester that’s on ITV.
In the first from the Roodee, RHOSCOLYN looks worth an each-way play at around 7/1.
They’ve had plenty of rain on already watered ground at Chester, meaning that conditions should be ideal for David O’Meara’s eight-year-old.
He hasn’t won for over a year, but he is now nine pounds below his last winning mark and looks too well-handicapped to ignore, especially from a good inside draw in stall one.
