Times to charge for online content
NEWS International will charge readers for online versions of its Times and Sunday Times from June, the company has announced.
Access to two new websites for the titles will cost £1 per day or £2-a-week.
Subscribers to the print versions will get free access to the sites.
Both titles will launch new websites in May, replacing the exisiting combined site.
Chief executive of News Corp’s British newspaper unit News International – which cludes the Sun – Rebekah Brooks said in a statement: “This is just the start. At a defining moment for journalism, this is a crucial step towards making the business of news an economically exciting proposition.”
Rupert Murdoch, chairman of parent company News Corporation, said sven months ago all his titles would stop giving away their online content “because quality journalism is not cheap”.
