Thornton axes jobs as sales slide again
CHOCOLATE retailer Thorntons said a decline in sales had deepened yesterday as it announced cuts in head office jobs.
Like-for-like sales in its 377 stores fell 6.2 per cent in the 10 weeks to 26 June, down from a 4.6 per cent fall in the previous quarter.
Thorntons said about 35 jobs would go at its head office over the next three months.
The firm, based in Derbyshire, issued a profits warning in April and said that chief executive Mike Davies would be replaced. Thorntons said the company was now trading “in line with expectations”. Thorntons Direct, the confectioner’s online business, saw sales grow 17.1 per cent to £0.9m – largely thanks to corporate customer demand.
