Tour de France 2015: Geraint Thomas brushes off horror crash to remain sixth
Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas shrugged off a horror crash to remain sixth overall as fellow Briton Chris Froome retained the yellow jersey after stage 16 of the Tour de France yesterday.
Thomas collided with France’s Warren Barguil on the final descent to the finish line in Gap, an impact which saw the 29-year-old veer off course and hit his head on a telegraph pole. The Welshman remounted and finished just 38 seconds down on the main group of favourites, while Spain’s Ruben Plaza held off green jersey leader Peter Sagan to win the stage.
“I’m okay, just hit my head on the lamppost, but I’m all right. The doctor asked me a few questions, my name and stuff. I said I’m Chris Froome,” joked Thomas.
“Everyone knows it’s a dodgy descent. I just got taken out. One hundred per cent it was a mistake. We were just coming into a tight right, Barguil just came straight into me. Nothing you can do there.”
Froome remains three minutes and 10 seconds ahead of second-placed Nairo Quintana in the general classification.
