Study says tourism industry has created a third of UK’s new jobs
THE UK’S tourism industry is set to grow at a faster pace than crucial sectors such as retail, construction and manufacturing, according to a report published this morning.
The Deloitte study, commissioned by the UK government-funded group Visit Britain, says that the tourism sector will grow by 3.8 per cent a year from now until 2025.
Tourism is responsible for one in three new UK jobs created from 2010 to 2012, the research says.
Speaking at the launch of the report this morning, minister for tourism Helen Grant will say that tourism “is fundamental to our economic success as a country”.
Last month chancellor George Osborne said during a trip to China that he will simplify the process by which Chinese tourists obtain visas to visit the UK. Business groups and airlines have complained that the system is costing the UK over £1bn in lost revenue a year. Culture secretary Maria Miller will also be visiting China this month.
