Store makeovers help Superdrug keep its tills ringing at Christmas
SUPERDRUG yesterday posted a rise in like-for-like sales over Christmas thanks to a revamp of its stores and shoppers buying gifts such as perfume over the festive period.
The health and beauty retailer, which launched 50 years ago on Putney High Street and now has 850 shops in the UK & Ireland, said like-for-like sales grew by 1.5 per cent in the nine weeks to 28 December compared with the same time last year.
Fragrance was one of the best-sellers over Christmas with over 1.7m bottles of perfume sold, driven by sales of pop group One Direction’s debut scent Our Moment.
Superdrug boss Joey Wat said: “Our Christmas trading figures show a solid performance during challenging times which is good news as we head into our 50th birthday year.”
She added that work done to refit more than half of its stores also boosted sales.
Superdrug’s sister discount chain Savers also performed well, with like-for-like sales up 10.9 per cent in 2013.
The two retailers are owned by AS Watson, a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa.
