RUTH, THE HAPPY SHOPKEEPER
Ruth runs the Yamikau Mulungu corner shop, which opened in 2001 at the edge of Nsanje market in southern Malawi. She sells a range of groceries and small household items.
Ruth recently took out her first loan for £76. She used the loan to build up her stock. She also decided to diversify and buy some rice which she stores to sell when there is a shortage. She has finished repaying her first loan and is keen to take another. Ruth feels that her business has improved a lot since taking out her loan. Buying more stock has increased her profit which has resulted in her feeling more confident and able to make better decisions.
The City A.M. appeal is helping more Malawians like Ruth to grow their businesses and build a better future for their families and local communities.
