The Rocketman powers up and rocks Battersea
BATTERSEA Power Station might be more synonymous with Pink Floyd than their contemporary Elton John, but it was the Rocket Man himself who shook the station’s four pillars last night as celebrities, London’s property heavies and potential residents of the site partied together.
“Elton John said he never thought he’d play here. This is an amazing party venue!” Jones Lang LaSalle’s chief exec Guy Grainger told The Capitalist.
Robert Tincknell, chief executive of the Battersea Power Station Development Company, had a successful night despite an early snafu. When he and young singer-songwriter Tom Odell were drawing names out of a hat for someone to win an exclusive meal cooked by Mark Hix on top of the station, Tom picked Robert’s own name out in front of the crowds.
Attendees including actor Liam Neeson and Olympic diver Tom Daley boogied to Elton’s biggest hits until late. Most people agreed that hearing Elton belt out “I’m still standing” had a special significance in the centre of the embattled station.
