Rise of mums as main earner
SINCE 1997, more than a million more mothers have become the breadwinner in their family, earning the majority of their household’s income, according to new research.
New research by the think tank IPPR says that there are now 2.2m women with children either working as single mothers, or earning an equal or larger wage than their partner in the UK.
In the fifteen years between 1997 and 2012, the proportion of single mothers who are working has also shot up, from 43 to 58 per cent.
