Reshuffle day two: Jesse Norman sacked as Treasury minister
Boris Johnson continues his reshuffle today, after a major shakeup to his top team yesterday afternoon. Johnson will fill dozens of ministerial roles that sit under the secretary of state in each department.
17.56 International trade minister sacked
Trade minister Graham Stuart has been sacked, along with two others in the latest announcement.
Stuart had been in the role since 2018.
Foreign minister James Duddridge and culture minister Matt Warman were also announced as leaving the government by Number 10 this evening.
19.04 More ministerial appointments announced
Number 10’s latest list of new ministerial appointments are:
- Alex Chalk MP as Solicitor General;
- Chloe Smith MP as Minister of State at the Department for Work and Pensions;
- Rt Hon Conor Burns MP as Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office.
18.35 Recap of yesterday’s reshuffle news
Dominic Raab was demoted from foreign secretary to justice secretary, with former international trade secretary Liz Truss promoted to the top role.
Raab was also given the title of Deputy Prime Minister, a largely ceremonial role that is rarely appointed by Prime Ministers.
Other big changes saw Michael Gove appointed as housing secretary to replace a sacked Robert Jenrick, while former education secretary Gavin Williamson was replaced by vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi.
A surprise move saw health minister Nadine Dorries moved to culture and digital secretary, with Oliver Dowden made Tory party chair.
18.26 Tory rising star Neil O’Brien made housing minister
Tory rising star Neil O’Brien has been made housing minister under the leadership of new housing secretary of Michael Gove.
O’Brien, who was elected in 2017 and is a former adviser to George Osborne, had been acting as an adviser to the Prime Minister on the levelling up agenda.
Ten ministerial appointments in total were just announced by Number 10:
- Robin Walker MP as Minister of State at the Department for Education;
- Rt Hon Lucy Frazer QC MP as Financial Secretary to the Treasury;
- Victoria Atkins MP as Minister of State at the Ministry of Justice. She will remain as Minister for the Afghan resettlement scheme and Operation Warm Welcome;
- Gillian Keegan MP as Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care;
- Lee Rowley MP as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and as Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury);
- Neil O’Brien MP as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government;
- Maggie Throup MP as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care;
- Helen Whately MP as Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury;
- Amanda Solloway MP as a Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury).
18.15 Earlier today: Penny Mordaunt moved to Department of International Trade
Penny Mordaunt was moved from a position in the Cabinet Office to minister under new trade secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan.
Mordaunt, a former cabinet secretary under Theresa May, is taking the place of Chelsea and Fulham MP Greg Hands who has been moved to a ministerial role in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (Beis).
Kemi Badenoch was also moved from her role as a Treasury minister to a joint ministerial role with the Foreign Office and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
18.08 Jesse Norman sacked as Treasury minister
Jesse Norman has been sacked as Treasury minister in a surprise move on day two of Johnson’s reshuffle.
Downing Street has just announced 10 new sackings of ministers, with Norman the most eye catching.
The Hereford and South Herefordshire MP was one of the most senior ministers in Treasury and had served in a number of government roles under Theresa May.
The six sackings just announced are:
- Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP – previously Minister of State at the Department for Education;
- Rt Hon John Whittingdale OBE MP – previously Minister of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport;
- Rt Hon Jesse Norman MP – previously Financial Secretary to the Treasury;
- Caroline Dinenage MP – previously Minister of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport;
- Luke Hall MP – previously Minister of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government;
- Justin Tomlinson MP – previously Minister of State at the Department for Work and Pensions.
Gibb, Whittingdale and Hall all announced their departures from government earlier today on Twitter.
