Pro-union CBI loses more members in Scotland
BUSINESS organisations in Scotland are voting with their feet after the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) came out against Scottish independence.
In a further blow to the organisation after a number of members resigned over the weekend, both Glasgow and Aberdeen universities quit yesterday amid concerns about impartiality. Edinburgh University is also understood to have resigned its membership. They follow Scottish Enterprise, Visit Scotland, STV, Aquamarine Power and the Balhousie Care Group, who have already quit CBI Scotland.
John Cridland, director general of the CBI, sought to play down the decision to register as part of the no campaign, claiming the CBI made an independent decision based on compliance.
“We are all in uncharted waters and recognise and respect that difficult decisions may need to be taken,” he said yesterday, adding: “We have a clearly stated position that Scotland and the rest of the UK are stronger together on economic grounds as part of the union and this reflects the views of the vast majority of our members.”
