Paris shooting: Armed man wearing “explosive vest” shot dead by police on Charlie Hebdo anniversary
An armed man has been shot dead by police in Paris after trying to enter a police building in the city on the anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks.
The incident took place a the Rue de la Goutte d'Or in the 18th arrondissement in the north of the French capital. The man reportedly ran at the police station wielding a knife and shouting "Allahu Akbar", French officials have said.
Several local reports suggest the man may have been wearing an explosive vest and witnesses near the scene shared pictures on social media appearing to show a bomb disposal robot deployed near the body. AFP reports the man was wearing a fake suicide belt.
Speaking shortly before the incident, French President Francois Hollande promised 5,000 extra police and 2,000 more intelligence jobs to beef up security in the country which has been targeted by jihadists. He warned that the threat of terrorism will continue to weigh on the country but new laws would be passed and security ramped up to tackle it.
Terrorists attacked the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo a year ago today killing 17 people.
The road where today's shooting took place is less than two miles from the scenes of further terrorist attacks against the city in November which killed more than 100 people.
