Obituary Karl Slym, Tata Motors
THE MANAGING director of Indian automobile company Tata Motors died yesterday in Bangkok.
British businessman Karl Slym, who was hired by the company in 2012 to boost dwindling sales and increase its market share, was in the Thai capital to attend a board meeting of Tata Motors Thailand.
He died after falling from a hotel balcony, according to local reports.
“Karl Slym joined Tata Motors in October 2012, and was providing leadership to the company through a challenging market environment,” Cyrus Mistry, chairman of Tata Motors, said in a statement.
“The company shares in the grief of Karl Slym’s wife and family at their irreparable loss,” he added.
The Derby-born 51-year old Slym ran all of Tata Motors’ operations except Jaguar Land Rover in the UK.
He had previously worked for Toyota in the UK, and for General Motors for 17 years in both China and India.
