Obama has a wafer-thin lead on Romney after final debate
AMERICAN voters think that Barack Obama won Monday’s debate with presidential challenger Mitt Romney, but the incumbent’s lead in the poll lingers around the statistically insignificant one per cent mark, according to a poll yesterday.
Obama leads by 47 per cent to Romney’s 46 per cent in a survey of likely voters partially conducted after the final televised debate, Reuters and Ipsos said yesterday.
The poll reflects a tight race since shortly after the two candidates met for their first debate on 3 October. But a substantial portion of voters remain up for grabs. Roughly a fifth of those surveyed say they could switch their votes or have not yet made up their minds.
Among the larger pool of registered voters, Obama leads Romney 46 per cent to 42 per cent.
In their final debate on Monday, Obama accused the former Massachusetts governor of a reckless and inconsistent approach to international affairs. Romney played down his disagreements with the president as he sought to present a reassuring image to a war-weary public.
