Luiten claims the Wales Open
DUTCHMAN Joost Luiten claimed yesterday’s Wales Open at Celtic Manor, the final competition on British soil ahead of this weekend’s hotly-anticipated Ryder Cup.
Luiten had to battle hard to finish on 14 under par, narrowly overcoming the challenges of England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Ireland’s Shane Lowry, who both finished on 13 under par.
The biggest name towards the top of the leaderboard was local favourite Jamie Donaldson, who will now join up with Europe’s Ryder Cup team. Donaldson was one of five players to end 12 under par yesterday.
Donaldson’s Europe head to Gleneagles on Friday as both defending champions and the bookmakers’ favourites.
The average world ranking of the US team is below that of their European rivals, while former world No1 Tiger Woods will miss the famous tournament for the first time since 2008.
