London commuters face huge rise in tube fares, warns RMT
TRANSPORT FOR LONDON (TfL) could hike passenger tube fares to “eye-watering” levels making the “travelling public pay through the nose”, RMT has warned.
The trade union has said that TfL has not given it enough information over Olympic transport plans.
London commuters will have to shoulder fare increases as TfL tries to “plug a £5bn deficit gap” according to RMT.
The mayor’s office said that currently no moves have been made to increase fares, with a decision likely to be made by mayor Boris Johnson in the autumn.
RMT claimed that not enough transparency has been given to the union over TfL’s plans for the Olympics and accused the transport group of failing to communicate properly with the unions.
“We don’t know what the plans for the Olympics are. It is mind blowing that there has been no dialogue with the trade unions and nothing has been signed off,” said RMT.
TfL disputed the claim and said: “We are committed to honest and open dialogue with the trades unions.”
