I’m better off as a centre forward insists Barkley
EVERTON and England’s Ross Barkley has revealed that he would prefer to play as a striker, rather than the deeper-lying attacking roles in which he is employed for club and country.
Barkley, who could win his 11th international cap tonight against Italy, has netted just twice in 30 appearances for the Toffees this season and is still searching for his maiden England goal.
“I’m a striker,” said the 21-year-old. “I feel I can have my greatest impact there because I’m free to roam around the pitch, take players on, have shots and create chances.”
The Goodison Park youth product concedes this has been a more difficult campaign than last term, when he scored six times in 34 matches to earn a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad.
“From my point of view I haven’t done as well as I know I can, but things like this happen,” Barkley added. “You have to go through bad days to get to the great days you have in your career. I don’t feel pressure. I believe in myself and I know what I can do. I just focus on getting better every day.”
