Huhne urges EU to cut more emissions
EUROPEAN businesses should be hit by much tougher rules on greenhouse gas emissions, according to energy secretary Chris Huhne and environmental ministers in Germany and France.
The politicians called on the EU to slash emissions by 30 per cent in the next ten years, instead of the current 20 per cent target, in a joint letter to today’s Financial Times.
The current target will mean Europe loses low carbon investors to countries like China, the trio claimed.
The additional cuts would cost around €11bn to achieve, said the ministers, which is cheaper than originally thought because emissions dropped during the recession.
But the European Commission put extra targets on ice in May after businesses complained about the cost.
