How to pass the torch to your hero
EVER since the theft of fire from Zeus by Prometheus (well, that’s what the legend says), a torch has been kept alight throughout the Olympics. And in the run up to the coming Olympics, beginning on 19 May 2012, it will be carried across the country in relay by those nominated as community heroes.
The torchbearers will be running the flame through 70 locations in the UK, finishing in London to mark the start of the Games.
NOMINATE A FRIEND
Nominations for heroes to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) are closed and the lucky winners will be announced next week, but, fear not, you might not have missed your moment in history.
Samsung, Coca Cola and Lloyds TSB have got hold of some places. Samsung want community heroes, Coca Cola are looking for passionate people (it doesn’t matter what about). Lloyds TSB seek people who have made a difference in the area where they live. You can nominate yourself and your friends. The only criteria are that the nominee lives in the UK and is over 12 years old. To do this, you have to log on to their respective websites and sign up before the deadline (details below).
WATCHING THE FLAME
Watching these folk shouldn’t prove too tricky. LOCOG promises that every Brit should be less than an hour away from a glimpse of the iconic relay.
