The government has confirmed the dates of the Witney and Batley and Spen by-elections
The government has confirmed that the by-elections to replace David Cameron and Jo Cox will both take place on the same day.
Today it said the by-elections in Witney and Batley and Spen will both take place on 20 October this year.
The by-election in Witney was triggered by former Prime Minister David Cameron announcing on Monday that he will stand down from his post as MP for the Oxfordshire seat.
Cameron said he had thought "long and hard" about the decision, but added that "it isn't really possible to be a proper backbench MP as a former Prime Minister".
Meanwhile, Batley and Spen has been without an MP since the tragic murder of its Labour representative Jo Cox in June.
The Conservatives confirmed shortly afterwards that they will not put forward a candidate to contest the seat as a mark of respect for what the party called a "much-loved and respected politician".
However, Jack Buckby, a former member of the British National Party, has said he will stand as the candidate for "anti-Islamisation" party Liberty GB.
