GlaxoSmithKline announces £25m Scottish expansion
Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced on Friday a £25m expansion of its Montrose site in Angus, Scotland. The move is set to create 25 jobs, taking the company's workforce in Scotland to above 750. A further 50 contractors will be employed for the construction phase of the expansion.
The non-departmental public body Scottish Enterprise announced, in conjunction with the expansion, that £1.5m has been awarded to Angus council to provide better access to the GSK site and surrounding areas.
Scottish finance secretary, John Swinney, said:
GSK’s investment is testament to the skill of the Scottish workforce and illustrates the confidence international companies have in Scotland as a country to invest in.
Montrose has the infrastructure, experience and skills to deliver success for GSK and the company’s commitment to Scotland is further positive news for financial enterprise and the wider Scottish economy.
Roger Connor, president of global manufacturing and supply for GSK, also expressed his confidence in the new expansion, saying "Ours is a fast-moving and competitive environment and the investment should be seen as a vote of confidence in the skills, standards and drive of the people who work here."
The move follows GSK's announcement last year to invest £100m in Montrose as well its manufacturing site in Irvine.
