England’s Rose concedes Grand Slam victory to sensational Scott
MASTERS champion Adam Scott shot a sensational course-record final round of seven under par to win the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, £375,000 prize and champion’s pink jacket yesterday.
England’s Justin Rose, victor at this year’s US Open, held an overnight two-shot lead from Jason Dufner in the four-player event at the Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda and was still in front with three holes remaining.
Rose birdied four of the first seven holes and looked on course for victory, but bogeys at the ninth and 16th handed Scott a chance.
And the Australian, three shots off the pace at the start of the round, picked up four shots in the final six holes including an eagle three at the 17th for the win.
And Rose conceded Scott deserved his success.
“When you’re in that position you want to close it out. But when somebody finishes it out like that you have to tip your hat and say you were beaten rather than losing,” said Rose.
“I started with a two-shot lead and somebody had to shoot well to beat me. I didn’t have my best game all week really and I’d have been surprised to win.”
US PGA champion Dufner was third, carding 70 yesterday, while reigning champion Padraig Harrington, who replaced British Open winner Phil Mickelson in the field, shot a level par final round, but finished 11 shots behind Scott.
