Davey lays into energy price freeze scheme
THE POLITICAL rift over energy policy widened today, with Liberal Democrat energy secretary Ed Davey set to criticise Labour’s pledge to freeze energy bills.
“It will… threaten investment in energy security, push up prices for consumers… destroy competition by solidifying the power of the Big 6 and do nothing at all to reduce emissions,” he will say today, in a speech at the Institute for Public Policy Research.
Davey is also set to accuse the other parties of putting political consensus over climate change in jeopardy, accusing right-wing Conservatives and Ukip of undermining public trust in the scientific evidence for climate change and of europhobia, creating “a diabolical cocktail that threatens the whole long-term structure of UK climate change and energy policy”.
