Cowes Week Diary: Lack of wind means impromptu day off at Cowes
YOU are only as good as your last race, that’s a normal sailing mantra. Unfortunately the most impressive sight yesterday at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week was the armada of yachts charging back up the river when racing was abandoned for the day.
Light winds led to racing being called off and competitors were keen to be the first in the queue at the bar in the beer tent.
The competitors woke up to brilliant sunshine and a forecast which expected a good sea breeze to develop. Unfortunately sailing does require the wind and the sea breeze didn’t arrive.
The Royal Yacht Squadron, who were running the racing, got all the boats out on the water in anticipation there would be some action, but it didn’t materialize. Sunbathing whilst drifting with the tide was the main activity.
The sailors were disappointed, but the Cowes high street shop owners were happy as no sailing must boost the economy, with nothing to do but drink or shop.
I hope the forecast for this morning is wrong and the boats get sailing as another day milling around would be disappointing.
