CITY VIEWS | WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THE PASTY TAX U-TURN?
HOWARD WATT
FIDELITY
I bought a pasty from Greggs this morning and it did seem a little expensive, but it’s still much cheaper than a lot of the other food that is being sold in the City. I think booze and cigarettes should be taxed to encourage healthy lifestyles and pasties are quite fattening too. To make up for the lost revenue the government is just going to find something else to tax.

BARCLAYS
I’m very happy that they have rectified their mistake as when I first heard of it I remember thinking it was outrageous. Although it doesn’t affect me as such, I still think a 20 per cent increase is a lot for people on tight budgets. I know it would have been for me when I was working at Tesco. I know the government is broke, but taxing what the working class eats just isn’t fair.

The way the government dealt with it, first levying the tax and now removing it was a shambles, but then again it’s almost expected. I think it’s a good thing that cigarettes and beer are taxed. But pasties are hardly the most detrimental food we eat. In my opinion everyone should be able to buy and eat what they want.
