City of London Corporation puts its legal challenge on ice
THE CITY of London Corporation has put its legal bid to evict the Occupy London protesters on ice while it digests the church’s astonishing U-turn.
There are now fears the campsite surrounding St Paul’s could remain until the 2012 Olympics.
Meanwhile, City A.M. has learned the City of London Corporation has held meetings to discuss ways to prevent the protesters making it a target.
Sources close to the Corporation are expecting disruption to the Lord Mayor’s show on 12 November in retaliation to its bid to evict them from their makeshift campsite.
The development comes after the The Corporation appeared to lighten the tone of its rhetoric. Earlier this week a spokesman told City A.M. that “camping in one of the most densely used spaces in the world is not an option”. But yesterday a statement said it was only interested in clearing the public highway, adding: “Let’s hope talks can produce some early acceptable results.”
The campers yesterday held a 500-strong meeting in which they attempted to draft a mission statement linking the various protest movements across the world.
