City Airport submits £200m upgrade plan
LONDON City Airport has submitted plans to create space for almost double the number of flights it can handle by 2023, as part of a £200m expansion project.
City Airport, which won clearance to lift its flight numbers from 70,000 to 120,000 a year back in 2009, has asked Newham Council for permission to build new plane parking stands and a parallel taxiway alongside the runway.
The airport, owned by Global Infrastructure Partners, said the improvements are needed to make better use of the existing runway and accommodate the next generation of larger planes.
“The proposed development has the potential to create as many as 1,500 new jobs, providing further employment in east London,” said chief executive Declan Collier in a statement yesterday.
