Capello successor can be foreign, says Robertson
SPORTS Minister Hugh Robertson has urged the Football Association to reconsider their decision to restrict the search for the next England manager to only English candidates.
Appetite for a home-grown candidate is high within the FA as they consider who should replace Fabio Capello after next summer’s European Championships.
But Robertson believes football could learn from the England cricket team, who have enjoyed huge success under the guidance of Zimbabwe-born head coach Andy Flower.
“It should be the best person available,” Robertson told the Leaders in Football conference in London yesterday. “It would be nice to have an English manager but what football fans want is to win tournaments. Look at the England cricket team: they’re top of the world and no-one cares Andy Flower is Zimbabwean.”
