Blackberry user outcry at server outage
Millions of Blackberry users have been cut off from their email, web and messaging services today after a major outage at the provider, Research in Motion.
Blackberry owners took to forums and Twitter in an outcry after servers covering Europe, India, Africa and the Middle East went down in late morning.
RIM’s data centre in Slough is believed to be the source of the outage.
“We are investigating, and we apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused whilst this is resolved,” RIM said in a statement.
The chorus of criticism heaps pressure on Canadian manufacturer RIM, which is already struggling with a sales downturn as customers desert its smartphones for either Apple or Google rivals.
A poor reception for its Playbook tablet computer has increased pressure on RIM’s top management, while a string of senior staff have left.
It has cut about 2,000 staff already this year to slash its cost base as it copes with the collapse in its sales.
