■ Square Mile stalwart and market commentator at Panmure Gordon David Buik is known for his poetic City commentary – often quoting the likes of Whitman, Shakespeare, Poe and Housman. But he began his daily missive with a more modern rhyme on Monday – and one that will be all too familiar to weary Bank Holiday passengers. Getting into the holiday spirit, Buik sent out a verse of his very own to loyal readers: “I have a little Satnav/I’ve had it all my life/It’s better than the normal ones/My Satnav is my wife.”
■ One of The Capitalist’s favourite providers of amusing surveys, Travelodge, released statistics yesterday on the reading material most commonly abandoned by guests. Among the top novels to be discarded in London hotels of late are apparently Fifty Shades of Grey sequel Fifty Shades Freed and Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy. However, there were more business books found beneath the sheets in the capital than anywhere else. And which were most popular? The Capitalist is told that Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman and The Mind Management by Steve Peters are bedtime tomes of choice in the City. If only those walls could talk.
