BORIS Johnson is rolling up his sleeves and donning his chef’s hat this week to try and give London’s schoolchildren a decent breakfast.
The Mayor’s Fund for London is supporting the first-ever Biggest Breakfast event this Thursday, with the aim of expanding its morning meal scheme beyond the current 50 primary schools in seven of the city’s most deprived boroughs.
The effort follows news that one in four school children only eat one decent meal a day (lunch) and 32 per cent skip breakfast.
Joining Johnson are Neil Fox and Verity Green, who will be broadcasting Magic FM’s breakfast show from City Hall (and presumably enjoying a slap-up meal from Café Johnson to boot).
Businesses including Roast Restaurant in Borough Market are also hosting breakfast events to raise funds for the charity programme.
“You don’t have to be a trained chef to prepare a nutritious breakfast,” says Biggest Breakfast supporter and London restaurateur Cyrus Todiwala, in an encouraging nod to the Mayor’s chances of cooking a decent poached egg on Thursday.
