Anglo American shuts mines as man found dead at Marikana
THE WORLD’S largest platinum producer Anglo American Platinum yesterday shut its Rustenberg operations as intimidation continued at its mines yesterday, while the death toll at Marikana rose to 45.
Around 1,000 workers confronted security at Amplats’ Rustenberg mine in South Africa, according to a police spokesperson. The five mines in the area have now been shut to protect its employees from further intimidation and violence.
Meanwhile another miner was found dead with deep gashes in his neck at Marikana.
There were still around 8,000 protesting miners at Marikana yesterday, as the strikes, which have dragged on for four weeks, showed no sign of abating.
Lonmin, the world’s third-largest platinum mine, said only 1.8 per cent of workers reported for duty yesterday, a figure that has progressively declined throughout the week.
Anglo American closed down 2.74 per cent yesterday at 1,901.5p, while Lonmin lost 5.89 per cent.
