Andreas Vogler’s AeroLiner3000: Here’s the UK’s (double decker) train of the future
Forget standing nose-to-armpit with your fellow commuters as your carriage wends its cautious way through the British countryside: in the future we could all be travelling in high speed comfort, on this double-decker bullet train.
The catchily-titled AeroLiner3000, by architect Andreas Vogler, is one of three shortlisted by the Rolling Stock Safety Board (RSSB) in a competition to propose new designs for passenger rolling stock across the UK's rail network. The competition is in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) and the Department for Transport (DfT).

According to Riba, Vogler's double-decker design "follows the consequent application of light weight thinking into the train world".
The design features "a combination of many singular elements concerning aerodynamics, locomotion, structure, interactive control systems and even passenger psychology".
Vogler said the project "will explore the potential for future-proof capacity, low carbon emission through light weight construction, cost sensitive innovation and improved customer comfort".

If the design is successful, the new stock could be introduced to the UK's rail network between 2020 and 2022.
The other shortlisted designs include a "flexible-purpose carriage" by 42 Technology, where seats can be turned around or stowed away automatically, and the "Horizon" train by Priestman Goode, which includes seating that can "flex between peak and off peak periods".
