Wilson secures first Tour glory
ENGLAND’S Oliver Wilson secured his maiden European Tour title after claiming a one-shot victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews yesterday.
Wilson carded a closing 70 to finish 17 under par, one shot ahead of world No1 Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Richie Ramsay.
The 34-year-old – ranked 792nd in the world rankings – played in the 2008 Ryder Cup but lost his European Tour card in 2012, requiring an invitation to play at At Andrews before chalking up his first title after nine second-placed finishes.
“So many people had written me off and that hurt but I kept believing,” said Wilson. “I could be drunk for a while, it’s been a long time coming and I have a lot of champagne on hold.”
