Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer has given birth to identical twin girls
Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer has had a baby. Or two, to be exact: identical twin girls.
She shared the news this evening on Tumblr, which is owned by Yahoo, saying:
Zack and I are excited to announce that our identical twin girls have arrived! They were born early this morning. Our whole family is doing great! Thanks to everyone for all of the support and well wishes throughout my pregnancy.
Mayer has previously said she would take limited time away as she works toward turning around the company's struggling online ad business.
She announced on her blog in September she was pregnant but said:
Since my pregnancy has been healthy and uncomplicated and since this is a unique time in Yahoo’s transformation, I plan to approach the pregnancy and delivery as I did with my son three years ago, taking limited time away and working throughout.
Mayer, 40, was pregnant when she first joined Yahoo as chief exec in 2012, and gave birth to boy in September that year.
The news comes the day after Yahoo performed a u-turn on its plans to spin off its lucrative stake in Chinese giant Alibaba.
The company was under pressure from activist investor Starboard, which had been calling for a reconsideration of the plans after US authorities ruled the move would not be tax free, and could result in a multi-billion dollar tax bill.
Instead, it said it is looking at creating a separate company to hold the rest of its assets, in a so-called "reverse spin-off". Yahoo will instead separate its core businesses, including a stake in Yahoo Japan, into a new company. Shareholders will receive stock in both companies.
