World leaders gather to mourn Nelson Mandela
WORLD leaders including David Cameron, Barack Obama and Angela Merkel will join stars such as Bono, Oprah Winfrey and the Spice Girls for a four-hour memorial service for Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg tomorrow.
Although the programme has so far not been revealed, President Obama is likely to deliver a speech and various pop stars are tipped to perform in honour of the former South African president.
The event will be held in a 95,000 seat football stadium in Soweto and is open to the public. To increase security, a large portion of Johannesburg’s arterial roads and airspace will be closed.
The service precedes Mandela’s private funeral, which will be held at Mandela’s rural home village of Qunu on Sunday and will be attended by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
