Watford’s £7.5m signing of Daryl Janmaat paves the way for DeAndre Yedlin’s escape from Tottenham to Newcastle
Watford have reinforced their defence with the £7.5m signing of Daryl Janmaat from relegated Newcastle, as Rafael Benitez’s Tyneside shake-up continues apace.
Holland international Janmaat, who joined the Magpies from Feyenoord in 2014, is the 12th player to leave St James’ Park either permanently or on loan this summer, with more expected to follow.
The 27-year-old, Watford’s eight signing of the transfer window, said: “I was really pleased that Watford showed interest in me because I wanted to play in the Premier League. They had a good season and I hope we can do the same again this year.”

Benitez has moved quickly to replace Janmaat by signing Tottenham and United States full-back DeAndre Yedlin, who spent last season on loan at Newcastle’s north-east rivals Sunderland.
Yedlin, 23, joined Spurs from Seattle Sounders two years ago but only ever made one senior appearance for the north Londoners, an 11-minute cameo off the bench in a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa in April 2015.
“Newcastle is such a big and historic club, and I’m excited to have the honour of playing for them,” he said. “I’m excited to learn under Rafa Benitez as well. He has an amazing resume.”
