Victorious West Indies promise more to come
WEST INDIES captain Darren Sammy and star batsman Marlon Samuels said the team must build on last night’s thrilling victory in the World Twenty20 final.
Sammy’s men battled back from a terrible start to beat Sri Lanka by 36 runs in Colombo. Having reached 137-6, West Indies limited the home side to 101 all out.
“The West Indies would love to be top even in Test cricket,” said Samuels, who top scored on 78.
His captain added: “This will hopefully be the beginning of things to come… we won’t say we are back, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
Earlier in the day in Colombo, England’s women cricketers suffered heartbreak as they lost the final of the World Twenty20 to Australia, by just four runs.
The Aussies reached 142-4, yet England – hitherto unbeaten in the competition – could only manage to end on 138-9, despite hitting 30 runs in the final three overs.
“Australia were better than us today,” confessed England’s captain Charlotte Edwards.
