Travelodge to construct a new hotel in heart of the City
Travelodge will open three new hotels, including a development in the heart of the City, in time for the 2012 Olympic Games.
A 77-bed hotel in a vacant office building off Cannon Street will cost £7.5m to develop. It hopes to attract business travellers as well as tourists visiting St Paul’s and Monument.
The firm will also open a new £6.8m 99-bed hotel on Uxbridge Road in Ealing, close to Kew Gardens and Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre.
A third £7.4m site next to the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green will involve an innovative tie-up with comedian Lee Hurst. His existing comedy club will be demolished to make way for the 131-bed hotel, with a new comedy club being incorporated into the ground floor.
Altogether 150 new jobs will be created through the expansion.
Travelodge has 39 hotels across London, providing over 4,500 rooms and representing four per cent of the total hotel market in the capital.
Travelodge’s managing director for development, Paul Harvey, said: “London is the engine room of our UK growth programme and these new sites will help us to become the biggest hotelier in London. Budget hotels are playing an important part in improving our capital’s value message to many overseas visitors.”
