Thomas Cook’s chief exec says sorry to parents
THOMAS Cook chief executive Peter Fankhauser finally came face to face with the parents of Bobby and Christi Shepherd yesterday after days of intense criticism over the firm’s handling of the tragedy.
“Mr Fankhauser apologised to my clients for all the mistakes he and his company made over the last nine years,” confirmed Leslie Thomas QC on behalf of Sharon Wood and Neil Shepherd. “He kept his word and gave a sincere and heartfelt apology.”
Shepherd confirmed the company had agreed to donate an undisclosed sum to six charities including the CO-Gas Safety, which supports families affected by similar tragedies, and the NSPCC, which he described as having “a special place” in the hearts of his children.
In addition, donations will be made to The British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research, Inquest and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Wood said they had asked Thomas Cook to demolish bungalow 112 and have it replaced as a “lasting tribute” in the form of a playground. “I hope that Thomas Cook and everyone who has defended its wrongdoings, now realises the impact of their actions and that lessons will be learned” she added.
Fankhauser spoke of his regret at the company’s and his own delay to reach this position, adding: “I am so grateful for the opportunity to meet and listen to Sharon Wood and Neil Shepherd. Having heard what they have had to say today, my heart breaks for them.”
The lawyer said the travel agent had agreed to meet the full legal costs of his clients and the costs of the inquest.
