These London boroughs have made the most from parking charges: Westminster, Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea
London boroughs netted an astonishing £293m from parking charges last year, according to new research by transport and research policy organisation the RAC Foundation.
They contributed 44 per cent to the £667m of the overall total raked in by local councils across the UK. The total figure has surged 12 per cent from last year's already sizeable amount of £596m.
Since city dwellers tend to choose Tubes, taxis and even the capital's famous Boris Bikes over their own cars, most of the fines are probably being levied out to visitors and tourists.
According to the report "40 per cent of total income comes from London, although Londoners own only 10 per cent of the cars in the UK but, of course, incoming commuters will also contribute to parking income and penalties".
Below you can see which London boroughs gobbled up the most parking charges, and which ones made the least.
Wealthy boroughs such as Westminster, Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and Islington took the top spots.
Anyone wanting to avoid parking charges should stay out of central London with boroughs such as Kingston, Richmond and Greenwich at the bottom of the ranking.
About the data: The figures are calculated by adding up income from parking charges and penalty notices, then deducting running costs. Southwark made a loss of £2.8m, which is not included in the last chart.
