the INSIDER
The flat season is almost over and it’s time for reflection. This year has been a bit peculiar as it has seen my betting turnover fall, mainly coinciding with the World Cup. The bookmakers have declared that I’m the exception as their turnover is up, especially on the World Cup. Ascot was a big winner for me and anyone who followed the tips – I just hope we can do the same next June.
The Group 3 John Smith’s Stakes at Newbury (2.40pm) tomorrow afternoon has an interesting look to it. At first glance Hot Prospect would seem to have this race sewn up but the additional two furlongs is a doubt as he failed over this trip in the Derby. Perhaps he will be fine but I’m going to risk backing the five-year-old mare CLOWANCE (4% win). I would be shocked if she wasn’t 100% fit and able on her first start since April.
Connections of TITUS MILLS (3% win) sidestepped the Dewhurst even though they had apparently wanted to keep this son of Dubawi to seven furlongs. In tomorrow’s Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster (2.55pm) he now has to tackle a mile for the first time but the opposition looks considerably easier and I think it will prove to be a wise decision.
Is HARRY PATCH (3% win) now in the handicapper’s grip? I’m not sure and have a feeling that Michael Jarvis may still have enough in the locker. However, if the high numbers have an advantage then CHEVETON (2% win) can make it three in a row.
