Suarez poised to return for Reds against rivals Manchester United
LIVERPOOL striker Luis Suarez could make his comeback from a 10-match ban against Manchester United, after the bitter rivals were drawn together in the third round of the Capital One Cup last night.
The Reds needed extra-time to see off League One strugglers Notts County 4-2 on Tuesday night and will now take on the Premier League champions in the week commencing 23 September, where Suarez will be available for the first time following his sanction for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.
Merseyside rivals Everton saw off Stevenage after extra-time last night, with a Marouane Fellaini strike, to set up a third round trip to Fulham.
The League One minnows took a surprise lead through Luke Freeman, but Gerard Deulofeu levelled for the home side before half-time.
And, with the prospect of a penalty shoot-out looming, Fellaini turned in Steven Naismith’s pass for a 115th-minute winner.
Late goals from brothers Shola and Sammy Ameobi earned Newcastle a 2-0 win at League Two strugglers Morecambe, while striker Kenwyne Jones bagged a hat-trick as Stoke beat Walsall 3-1. Aston Villa cruised to a 3-0 win over Rotherham thanks to goals from Andreas Weimann, Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph and will entertain Premier League rivals Tottenham in the next round.
Cardiff will travel to West Ham in round three after they beat Accrington Stanley 2-0 with goals from Nicky Maynard and Rudy Gestede. An Elliott Ward own goal and a second-half strike from Cristian Battocchio gave Watford a 2-0 win over Bournemouth.
Arsenal have been drawn away to West Brom in round three, while Chelsea will travel to Swindon.
