Strong US car sales heading for a record year in 2015 as General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Fiat and Nissan post booming sales
US car makers posted strong December sales, fuelling expectations that 2015 sales will hit a record high, as analysts suggest a stronger economy and plunging petrol prices could send 2016 sales soaring higher still.
December sales hit 17.8m vehicles, according to General Motors, besting the previous record from 2000 of 17.35m.
The country’s car sales, which have been boosted by some economic growth as petrol prices drop, could be heading for a new record.
Analysts are forecasting that sales will reach 18m in 2016, as the auto industry stays well on the path to a healthy recovery from its downturn slump.
GM posted monthly sales up 5.7 per cent from the same time last year, as Ford sales rose eight per cent, Toyota sales rose 11 per cent, Fiat rose 13 per cent and Nissan rose 19 per cent.
