Garcia makes early charge
GOLF: Defending champion Sergio Garcia fired an eight-under-par 63 to take an opening round lead in a weather-affected Castello Masters in Spain.
Garcia, playing on his home course and looking for to defend a title for the first time in his career, turned in a six-under 29 but then suffered as the wind gusted up to 40mph and eventually suspended play.
Sweden’s Michael Jonzon lies just behind him after a 64, while 43-year-old Jose-Maria Olazabal is a shot further back.
Huth handed three-game ban
FOOTBALL: Stoke City defender Robert Huth has been banned for three matches by the Football Association for punching West Ham’s Matthew Upson.
Referee Martin Atkinson missed the incident but the FA intervened after studying video evidence. Stoke have also taken their own disciplinary action.
Future looks bleak for Donington
FORMULA ONE: Silverstone could yet be in line to host the British Grand Prix from 2010 after Donington Park’s latest fund-raising attempt fell through last night.
Donington have missed several deadlines to provide financial guarantees they can hold the race, and F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone is fast running out of patience.
The Silverstone circuit, which has held the grand prix for the last 22 years, is ready to step back into the frame.
Donington chiefs refused to comment.
Jennings appeal is rejected
RUGBY UNION: Leinster’s Shane Jennings has failed in his attempt to have his 12-week eye-gouging ban overturned by the Independent Committee in Dublin.
Jennings was banned for making contact with London Irish lock Nick Kennedy during their Heineken Cup game on 9 October.
