A slick way to get onto Wall Street
MYTHS may have it that the streets of London are paved with gold, but the pavements in Midtown Manhattan were coated with something almost as lucrative yesterday after a truck spilled around 200 gallons of oil during the morning rush hour.
Traders more used to spending their days tracking the price of Brent crude were instead met with a tankerful of heavy fuel oil as they made their way to work. The spill even dripped into the 34th Street subway, forcing trains to bypass the station.
Resilient New Yorkers seem to have taken the spill in their stride though, with just four people requiring “decontamination” according to the city’s fire department.
Others took to Twitter to discuss the mishap.
“Oil spill outside my building? I guess anything can happen in Manhattan,” said one lackadaisical tweeter, while another posted:
“Apparently there’s an oil spill outside my office, I was under the impression this was Manhattan and not the Prince William Sound” – referring to the site of the infamous Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989.
