Sainsbury’s has teamed up with Deliveroo to launch a takeaway pizza trial as the supermarket targets a slice of the expanding delivery market.
Supermarkets are attempting to jump on the food delivery bandwagon as they seek new areas of growth. The UK’s food delivery market is worth £8.1bn, up 13.4 per cent since 2017, and is expected to grow to £9.8bn by 2021.
Customers in London will be able to order cooked pizza from Sainsbury’s Pimlico store. The two-month trial will also be tested at branches in Birmingham, Brighton and Cambridge.
Sainsbury’s said nearly 50 products will be available, including side orders, snacks and soft drinks alongside sourdough pizzas.
Asda, which was planning a merger with Sainsbury’s before the competition watchdog blocked the deal, trialled a pizza delivery service with Just Eat last year.
Earlier this month the supermarket announced it would partner with the takeaway platform again to trial a grocery delivery service.
Clodagh Moriarty, Sainsbury’s group chief digital officer, said: “With more and more shoppers looking for convenient and affordable meals delivered to their doors, our trial with Deliveroo brings our great value hot food direct to customers’ homes.
“We’re committed to making it as quick and easy as possible for our customers to shop with us and we’ll be listening to their feedback throughout the trial to understand how we can best serve their hot food delivery needs.
