Rutherford repeats London triumph as England jump top of medal table
OLYMPIC long jump champion Greg Rutherford shrugged off fitness concerns to win Commonwealth gold at Hampden Park last night before insisting there are more titles to come.
The 27-year-old leaped 8.20m on his third jump to beat South African Zarck Visser, as England went top of the medal table on day seven of the Games. “I think a few people had written me off thinking I was a one-hit wonder but I’m going to do it many more times,” said Rutherford.
Teenage gymnast Claudia Fragapane led an English clean sweep of the women’s individual all-around event, as the 16-year-old added to her team gold along with colleagues Ruby Harrold and Hannah Whelan, who won silver and bronze. Max Whitlock had earlier led from start to finish to win the men’s individual all-around event – his second gold of the Games.
England’s Jack Laugher exorcised the ghosts of London 2012 by taking gold in the men’s one metre springboard final. There was further joy in the pool as Rebecca Gallantree and Alicia Blagg won gold in the women’s synchro three metre springboard.
