Roy denied by last-gasp equaliser
MARCO ANDREOLLI’S stoppage time volley denied ten-man Fulham a third successive Europa League victory, at the expense of Italian giants Roma.
Roy Hodgson’s men took a deserved lead when defender Brede Hangeland headed home Bjorn Helge Riise’s cross from close range.
Hangland was then wrongly sent-off for a foul on Riise’s brother John Arne, only for the referee to correct his decision and order off Stephen Kelly instead.
Mark Schwarzer subsequently saved Jeremy Menez’s resulting spot-kick but the Cottagers were made to pay in the fourth minute of injury time when Andreolli volleyed home David Pizarro’s corner from three yards out.
“It’s very difficult to play with 10 men,” Hodgson explained. “But I thought the effort was magnificent, and it was cruel.”
The result saw Fulham relinquish their Group E top spot to Basel, who beat CSKA Sofia 2-0.
