Rio still has a part to play for England, says Welbeck
ENGLAND striker Danny Welbeck believes his Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand still has a valuable contribution to make at international level, despite being left out of Fabio Capello’s squad to face Montenegro on Friday.
The 32-year-old, a veteran of 81 caps, was surprisingly not part of the Italian’s plans for the clash in Podgorica, from which England need only a point to secure their place at next summer’s European Championships.
Capello may have omitted Ferdinand, who has recovered from an early season hamstring strain, but Welbeck insists it is far to early to start dismissing a player of such vast experience.
“Rio is a Rolls Royce of a defender,”said Welbeck, who will be hoping to start his first competitive game for his country. “I train with him every day. I know the capabilities that he has. It is wrong to write him off.”
